PROJECT SUMMARY

Sydney Chinese New Year is a colourful, vibrant event in the city’s calendar each year. When the project to design the identity came up for tender, we were fortunate enough to present the successful pitch.

Our approach combined the traditional Lunar New Year activities of paper craft and woodblock printing with iconic Sydney architecture to create something uniquely Chinese-Australian. Working with Chinese community leaders, much time was spent on perfecting the ‘chi’ of the animal; with the eyes and expression being of utmost importance.

The artwork was designed by the talented Mikel Longa, my role being identifying the tender and creating the pitch, through to drafting the brief and helping to art direct the project.

Project credits: design and illustration: Mikel Longa, creative direction: Eric O'Brien.
